Man Can't Fly
A chronicle of my travels during Spring and Summer 2008 mostly on foot and, predominantly around Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire. This grew out of participation in the 'thereisbeautyinthecity' website which was set up by artist Anna Francis as part of the Axis Festival, which takes place annually in Stoke on Trent at the beginning of May. This project is administered via free public access PC's in libraries within Stoke on Trent and Newcastle under Lyme. Michael Callan

- I have two children and belong to ‘City Voices’, a local creative writers’ group in Stoke on Trent. During April and May 2008 I participated in the Axis Festival as a volunteer and performance poet, joining associated projects such as: ‘There is Beauty in the City’ and ‘One City’; reading with ‘The Trentvale Poet’, Nick Corder, Kim Trusty and Lemn Sissay. ‘City Voices’ also ran a festival of Words and Music during this period. In September 2008 I will begin to study BA (Hons) Scriptwriting at Staffordshire University.
Vale Street, Stoke on Trent
The Salvation Army Hostel, Vale Street, Stoke, a much needed respite for 60 homeless men but there are some who can't be helped. An annexe has been built by the guys who can't keep to the rules behind a hoarding opposite the hostel.

We fly in our dreams
Unfettered by the clays of home
